The coach is the trade

A full-size expedition coach is the reason this fare works. It carries more people per journey than the minibuses on this site, and the economics of that show up directly in the price: $59 against $133 for the Arctic Breeze minibus and $351.93 for the eight-seat minivan.

What you give up is manoeuvrability. A coach is restricted to main roads and larger pull-offs, so it cannot follow a guide's instinct down a side track to a lake, and boarding twenty-plus passengers takes time that a brief gap in the cloud does not always allow.

What you gain, apart from the money, is real: heated seating for a long drive and a toilet on board. Chasing Lights states in its own fine print that toilet stops are made where possible and sometimes nature has to do. On a six-hour Arctic night that is not a small difference.

The suit is the hidden cost

Premium thermal winter suits are listed as an optional extra available to rent, with advance reservation recommended. Winter boots are a separate rental, subject to availability. Personal winter clothing — hat, gloves, scarf — is explicitly excluded, and so are full meals.

That is the honest reading of the $59. If you have arrived in Tromso with proper Arctic layers, this is a genuine bargain and probably the best-value seat in the city. If you have arrived with a city coat and trainers, add two rentals to the fare and compare again with the minibus that hands you a suit for $133.

The listing also recommends ice cleats for the outdoor stops. Nobody rents you those, and they cost around $10 at home.

The photographs and the certificate

Professional aurora photos are included at no extra cost and delivered within three to five days — the slowest of the five listings, where others send them the next morning or the same night. If you are flying home in two days, expect them to land after you get there.

The listing also promises a personalised Official Aurora Hunter Certificate on completing the expedition. Treat that as what it is: a souvenir, not a feature to weigh against a thermal suit.

What the policy actually says

If the operator's Aurora Guarantee criteria are not met, you may join another available expedition free of charge, for as many nights as your stay allows, subject to availability, until you experience a qualifying display.

That is the most generous guarantee among the Tromso chases we compare, and it is not close. Arctic Breeze offers one free repeat and only in September and October. The other three offer nothing at all.

The condition to read twice

An expedition counts as successful when the northern lights can be clearly documented by the operator's professional camera equipment during the trip.

That is a camera standard, not an eye standard, and the same listing tells you elsewhere that photographs often depict the aurora more strongly than you will see it. A faint grey-white band overhead that a long exposure renders bright green is a successful expedition under this policy, even if you walked away disappointed.

It is still worth having. Just book it early in your stay rather than on your last night, because the value of the guarantee is entirely in the number of evenings you have left.

The 4.6 is the lowest here, and that is informative

Four of the five chases we compare sit between 4.8 and 5.0. This one is 4.6 from 2,064 reviews — still a strong score, and the lowest on the page.

Read in context, it is roughly what a full-size coach at a third of the price should be expected to score against small-group minibuses. Reviewers who rate it highly say the same thing repeatedly: best value for money in town, warm bus, good spots, decent photographer. One traveller who had taken three different aurora tours in Tromso wrote that this was the cheapest and the best. The lower ratings come from people who expected a small-group experience at a budget fare.

No pickup, and a landmark meeting point

Hotel pick-up and drop-off are listed as exclusions. You meet at the Radisson Blu main entrance, and the listing is explicit that the hotel is a reference point only.

If you are staying centrally that is a five-minute walk. If you are not, you are paying for a taxi at both ends of a night that finishes after midnight — worth adding to the $59 before you compare it with the chases that collect you.

Travelling with children

The listing asks you to give children's age and height in advance rather than setting a minimum age, which makes this the more accommodating option compared with the adults-only premium chase and the under-10 exclusion on Arctic Breeze.

That said, the gear question bites hardest for families here. Suits and boots are rentals for every passenger, in every size you need, subject to availability. Reserve them when you book, not on the day.
